19 June: Julian Assange seeks asylum in Ecuadorian Embassy in London

Julian Assange has today walked into Ecuador’s London Embassy and sought political asylum. He is now under the protection of the Ecuadorian government while his request is being considered. The Embassy issued this statement.

Julian, who has previously been offered unconditional residency in Ecuador, has cited abandonment by Australia, attacks by top officials in Sweden and potential death penalty in the US amongst his reasons for this move, according to a press release by the Ecuador Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Integration.
